PageRank

Its all about PageRank

Spammers aren't really trying to get people to click on the links they spam your pages with. They are trying to get noticed in Google. Google's PageRank technology lists "popular" pages at the top. One method to determine "popular" pages is to look at the number of links to a page. So the spammers are trying to make themselves popular by spewing their links on wikis and blogs all over the internet.

Wiki Page rank

Wikis generally do quite well with page rank themselves. Often they genuinely are quite popular—lots of people link to wikis because they have useful information. Also wikis cover a diverse range of topics, and they do so in a very text intensive and heavily interlinked manner. In other words, wikis use the hypertext medium in the way it was intended, and this makes it easy for search engines to match search keywords to relevant information within the wiki pages.

Blog page rank

The same can be said for blogs. Blogging software promotes the idea of interlinking to other blogs and useful related information. An interesting social aspect of blogging, is that popular blogs receive more incoming links, and so page rank becomes the virtual currency motivating people to write interesting/useful/fun content.

Spammers page rank

Because wikis and blogs can gain good page rank, they are an attractive target for abusive linking. This is because spammers can indirectly benefit from their good page rank. Search engines dont just count the number of incoming links to a site. They also pay attention to the quality of the page on which the link is placed, so if a popular wiki links to a spamers website, then some of that page rank will rub off on them.

Chongqed.org page ranks

As mentioned before, the sole motivation for spamming, is to increase the pagerank of the spammer's website. As well as being an abuse of the victim's website, this is an abuse of the page rank system. The system is devised to provide quality search engine results to the users (ordinary web surfers), but spammers are trying to leap-frog higher in search results than then they deserve to be.

The idea of chongqed.org is to hit them where it hurts. To steal back the page rank and leap-frog above them in the search results. While we're up there, we'll tell the world about their inconsiderate selfish spamming activities! To acheive this aim, we are also interested in gaining page rank.

OurPageRanks in general are pretty good (because of all the incoming links we've gained so far), but we are seeking to optimise on particular keywords which the spammers wanted to optimise on. We ask the wiki/blog community to help us in this endeavor, by adding links not just to chongqed.org, but to our spammers & keywords database.
