If you have just made a big update to this banned content list, you might like to install and run the Despam Extension to flush out any existing spam on your wiki.
Surge Protection is enabled by default. This can help prevent heavy automated WikiSpamming but is designed mainly to prevent someone from downloading the entire wiki and causing strain on the webserver. With its default settings it likely has no effect on most spammers.
